The Levanger commune is one of our two Norwegian partners. Levanger is situated in the Nord-Trøndelag region in the central part of the country. The area has 19 000 inhabitants, over 50% of which live in the town of Levanger or nearby. The wooden buildings are one of the main tourist attractions of the town.
They are also the priority for the authorities of the commune, who protect the historical wooden centre of the town in collaboration alongside the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage (RA), Norwegian Institute for the Research on Cultural Heritage, and the Cultural Heritage Fund. With the help of the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Fund, the commune plans to organize courses on wooden architecture. Our mutual cooperation will teach us how to take care of wooden historical monuments and manage them properly. This in turn will allow us to exchange experiences concerning the preservation of invaluable monuments under our care. We plan to organize a series of lectures in Świdnica about the Church of Peace and its surroundings, and to hold discussions about renovation works, technical issues and promotion. During field seminars we will show unique wooden historical monuments and present interesting renovation solutions, e.g. the 17th century Papermaking Museum in Duszniki-Zdrój, the 1707 Weavers’ Houses in Chełmsk Śląski, churches in Kosieczyn (from the 14th & 15th century) and Tarnów Pałucki (14th century). We will also offer workshops in carpentering, traditional building and artistic craftsmanship, as well as visits to workshops of renovators working on our project. The Levanger commune will meanwhile prepare a presentation dedicated to ways of dealing with problems and protection of wooden houses in the area.
