The “Lutheran Enclave” project includes the renovation of the churchyard’s cemetery, which existed from the church’s foundation until the end of the nineteenth century. This is one of the most valuable evangelical cemeteries in Silesia, a beauty that is emphazised by the tombstones made mostly from natural stones.

We can mostly see sandstones, syenites and granites. Less common are marbles and limestones, from compact varieties to porous types. Of particular interest are the richly decorated baroque tombstones made out of sandstone and marble epitaphs.

It was the choice of the stone used that affected the durability of the tomb and its aesthetic qualities. The colour (not to mention the shape) is one of the major aspects of the tombs, says Jacek Gryczewski, a stone conservator. Under the project, a group of specialists are renovating 12 monuments that stand alone and a further 49 located on the wall. There is also ongoing construction work – the old roughcast will be removed and replaced, while it is also necessary to set the membrane that will cut off the ground water and set the wall coping with clinker bricks.
