Interesting decorations on tombs have been discovered by conservators in the cemetery at the Church of Peace, near the Church’s northern and western wall. Beneath the layers of earth ceramic tilling, visible geometric patterns appeared to form.

The diversity of tiles is especially surprising: the floor of one of the graves by the northern wall was put together with black and white marble slabs. Another was made from octagonal white tiles as well as dark coloured square and rectangular ones.

One of the graves was covered with light-green squares, dark-blue triangles and large white octagons. It is now possible to see that in the case of two graves, the constructors used ceramic and marble to form a shape resembling a simple chessboard. This most interesting floor, with two different coloured tiles and a distinct texture, was found near one of the graves situated by the Western Wall.

Meanwhile, the renovation of the cemetery, along with renovation of selected tombs, will end later this year.
