One of the many paintings found in the gallery has particularly surprised conservators working on the restoration of the church. The painting in the second gallery shows several men mining ore.
On the neighbouring boards we see sentences:
“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me” (NT Gospels:John 5:39 )
and
“They received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” ( Acts, 17:11)
According to historians, these men are gold diggers, however their images should be treated metaphorically.
The search for exceptionally precious metal is analogous with our everyday way of finding God. The verses from the Bible certify that the search for God is more important. Without the texts from the Bible, the scene would have been unclear.The text is the most important for Lutherans and these words are key to interpreting this scene – explains Piotr Oszczanowski, a PhD holder, art historian and director of the National Museum in Wrocław.
